Thakkali Sadam is a popular rice dish from the Tamil Nadu cuisine. It is a slightly spicy rice dish that is made with tomato, spices and rice. In the Tamil language, ‘thakkali‘ means tomato and ‘sadam‘ is rice. Just one serving a day of tomato based food can have an incredibly beneficial effect on our health. It is an excellent source of Vitamin C, folate, Iron, potassium, magnesium, chromium, choline,zinc and phosphorus.

Ingredients and spices that need to be Make ready to make Tomato Rice:

  1. 2 cups boiled long grain rice
  2. 3 tomatoes
  3. 2 onions
  4. 2 tbsp ginger garlic paste
  5. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  6. 4-5 fenugreek seeds
  7. 1 green chilli
  8. 4-5 curry leaves
  9. 1 small carrot
  10. 1/2 inch cinnamon stick
  11. 2 green cardamom
  12. 2-3 cloves
  13. 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  14. 1 tbsp ghee

Steps to make Tomato Rice

  1. First rinse your basmati (or other long grain rice) under water until the water comes out clear. Now soak your rice in fresh water for 20 to 30 minutes, then drain the rice and boil till just soft.
  2. Add ½ tsp mustard seeds to the heated vegetable oil and allow them to cook until crackling. Next, add 4 to 5 fenugreek seeds (methi) and fry for about a couple of seconds making sure you do not burn them.Now add 2 tbsp ginger garlic paste, 6 to 7 curry leaves and 1 chopped green chili
  3. Next, add chopped onions, ½ inch cinnamon stick, 2 green cardamom pods and 2 to 3 whole cloves.Now add in 1 cup of finely chopped tomatoes. This required about 3 medium tomatoes for me. Add the julienned carrot.Stir well to coat the tomatoes in the spices and sauté.Cook until the tomatoes become soft and pulpy, and the oil begins to release from the sides. add ghee and mix well.
  4. Now turn off the flame add in cooked rice, mix thoroughly so that rice gets coated nicely with the tomato masala. Adjust the spice levels if you want more spicy, I prefer less spicy as my kid would have it.
