Ingredients and spices that need to be Make ready to make Dal fry (with chana dal):
- For boiling chana dal you will need
- 1 cup chana dal (washed, soaked overnight preferably)
- to taste Salt
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 bay leaf
- as required Few black peppercorns
- 1 cardamom
- 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 Small cinnamon
- 2 cloves
- as per taste hing
- as required oil
- as required Water
- For making chana dal dal fry you will need
- as required Flavoured boiled chana dal
- 1 tbsp oil
- 1 onion
- 1-2 fresh green chillies
- 1 tomato
- as needed Salt
- 1/4 th tsp turmeric powder
- 1/2 tbsp coriander powder
- 1 tsp cumin powder
- 1 tsp heaped ginger - garlic paste
- 1 tsp curry powder
- 1/2 tsp garam masala
- 1/2 tsp Kasuri methi
- For double tadka
- 1/2 tsp ghee
- 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
- 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
- 1-2 dry red chillies
- as required Water to adjust consistency
- Include chopped cloves of garlic in both the tempering stages
- My kids don't like it so I haven't included
Instructions to make Dal fry (with chana dal)
- In a pressure cooker, take soaked chana dal. Add salt, turmeric, hing, few drops of oil, above-mentioned whole spices and water.
Pressure cook this for 4 whistles. Let it cool down and release pressure. Keep aside.


- Now take a kadhai. Heat oil. Put chopped onion and fresh green chillies.



- Saute for sometime. Next add chopped tomato.
Add in salt, turmeric powder, coriander powder and cumin powder.
Mix well and saute for sometime.
Next add freshly prepared ginger garlic paste.


- Mix and saute till the masala is cooked and all rawness is lost.
You get a superb aroma. Now into this cooked masala, add boiled and flavoured chana dal.


- Mix well. Keep flame slow and let it cook so that all flavours combine well with each other.
Now add curry powder and mix. Next add garam masala and mix.
As you see it nicely cooked, bubbling... crush some Kasuri methi and add it. Mix well.
Now switch the flame off and cover the dal.
After sometime,give a gentle mix and transfer the dal into the serving dish.


- Next...prepare for double tadka.
Place a kadhai/ tadka pan. Heat ghee. Splutter cumin seeds. Switch the flame off. Now put red chilli powder and dry red chillies as per your taste.
Put the aromatic tadka into the dal and immediately cover it with a lid.
Do not disturb!!
While serving mix and serve...
It's just wow!!
Serve it with rice/ roti/ paratha/zeera rice
